ABOUT THE ARTIST
The great beauty of Kevin Boucher's landscape paintings does not result from merely the manner in which he visually portrays each scene. His composition, colours and brush work combine to capture the intangible moods, movements and natural rhythms of the Australian countryside in an individual expression of intense feeling.
It is this unseen but considerable emotional content, which gives his work depth, drawing the viewer in and beyond into another dimension in which there is forever a new subtlety or nuance to be found.
Kevin Boucher put away his sketch pad and palette during his teenage years, whilst he studied at what he describes as "a tough old technical college where any hint of an artistic inclination was discouraged".
After studying for a period with Muriel and John Balmain of Oakleigh, during which time his painting remained primarily a hobby, he began to envisage art as his future. A one man show, not in a gallery but in a Moonee Ponds butcher shop, resulted in several sales, further fuelling his ambition. In 1971, Kevin decided to take a gamble and commit himself to becoming a full time artist.
Major success was not to eventuate until Kevin set up his own studio in Warrandyte. He began to be accepted by galleries and was overwhelmed when a major work - 8ft by 4ft canvas entitled "Moving the Herd", sold almost immediately for $20,000. Other major works have been purchased by companies such as BHP, Eagle Insurance, Shell Australia and the Australian Wheat Board.
This success enabled Kevin to travel further afield, finding inspiration in Europe and around Australia; although Kevin insists one really need look no further than his home State of Victoria to find "an incredible variety of magnificent scenery".
Kevin holds small informal weekly classes in his gallery/studio in Mt Evelyn, Victoria. Acting as a representative for Chroma Australia, Kevin also conducts painting workshops around Victoria for groups in their local area.
