CARDINIAN EMBROIDERY PROJECT
The Cardinian Embroidery Project is a Shire wide community arts project funded by VicHealth and Cardinia Shire Council.
The Cardinian Embroidery took ust two years and two months from start to finish.
114 workshops were held at 9 venues throughout the Shire and 8 communities held their own ongoing workshops in craft centres, community houses and private homes.
Countless new friendships were formed and old acquaintances renewed.
384 features of local significance were enbeoided by 218 women and one man. Cross-stitch, applique, blackwork, canvas work, free machine embroidery, fabric painting, hand embroidery and computerized machine embroidery were the main techniques used.
1856 residents, families and friends added their stitches to the canvaswork name panels.
The eight panels each measure 190cm in height and 140cm in width.
In keeping with conservation guidelines, mainly natural vegetable fibres were used, with the exception of small pieces of silk on windows of appliqued buildings. Some man-made threads were used, mainly rayon and polyester. All fabrics were pre-washed before use.
The Cardinian Embroidery has been made to last for years.
The two main aims of the project were to bring together people from all over the shire to share their skills and work together whilst producing a unique work of art that reflects the character of the Shire in 2005 and contributes to local heritage.
